Understanding Your Cooling System & Common Failure Points

  1. ELECTROLYSIS: This major cause of radiator failure occurs due to improper coolant pH or faulty electrical grounds. It causes internal corrosion, leading to pinhole leaks.

  2. CONTAMINATION & ADDITIVES: Using the wrong coolant, mixing types, or adding stop-leak products can clog the fine tubes of your radiator, drastically reducing heat transfer. Always use a 50/50 mix of approved coolant and distilled water.

  3. INADEQUATE pH LEVEL: Coolant becomes acidic over time, eating away at internal components. This “tube blooming” restricts flow and causes overheating.

  4. PRESSURE CAP FAILURE: The radiator cap maintains system pressure to raise the boiling point. A faulty cap can cause coolant loss, overheating, and air ingestion.

  5. THERMOSTAT NEGLECT: The thermostat should be replaced during every major cooling service (flush or radiator replacement) to ensure proper engine operating temperature and efficiency.

Professional Radiator Removal & Installation Procedure

PART 1: RADIATOR REMOVAL

  1. Prepare Vehicle: Park on level ground, set parking brake, and chock rear wheels. Disconnect the negative battery cable.

  2. Cool & Depressurize: Allow the engine to cool completely. Slowly and carefully remove the radiator pressure cap.

  3. Drain Coolant: Place a drain pan underneath. Open the radiator drain petcock or remove the lower radiator hose to drain the old coolant.

  4. Disconnect Transmission/Engine Oil Cooler Lines (if equipped): Use the correct wrench to disconnect these lines from the radiator tanks. Extreme care is needed to avoid stripping the fittings. Plug the lines to prevent fluid loss.

  5. Remove Fan/Shroud: Disconnect the electric fan connector or clutch fan. Remove the fan shroud or fan assembly.

  8. Unmount Radiator: Remove the radiator mounting bolts or brackets from the core support.

  9. Extract Old Unit: Carefully lift the old radiator straight up and out of the vehicle.

PART 2: ZING KING RADIATOR INSTALLATION

  1. Position New Radiator: Carefully lower the new ZING KING radiator into place, aligning all mounts.

  2. Reconnect Cooler Lines: Hand-thread the transmission or engine oil cooler lines into the new radiator. Cross-threading will void the warranty. Tighten with a wrench to manufacturer specifications.

  3. Re-mount Radiator: Secure the radiator with all mounting hardware.

  4. Reattach Condenser: Reconnect any brackets between the radiator and A/C condenser.

  5. Reinstall Fan/Shroud: Mount the cooling fan and/or shroud assembly and reconnect electrical plugs.

  6. Connect Hoses & Sensors: Attach all hoses using new clamps and reconnect any sensors.


System Flush, Fill, and Bleeding (WARRANTY CRITICAL)

Failure to completely flush the old contaminated coolant from the system is a leading cause of premature failure and WILL VOID the ZING KING radiator warranty.

  1. FLUSH: With the new radiator installed but hoses disconnected at the engine block (or using a flush "T" kit), use a cooling system flush chemical and water to vigorously back-flush the engine block and heater core until the water runs clear. This removes old sediment and contaminants.

  2. FILL WITH CORRECT COOLANT:

    • Use only the coolant type specified for your Jeep, Chevrolet, Ford, etc.

    • Always mix to a 50/50 ratio with distilled or deionized water. Never use tap water.

    • Some vehicles require a specific fill or bleeding procedure (e.g., raising the front end, opening bleeder valves). CONSULT YOUR REPAIR MANUAL.

  3. BLEED AIR FROM SYSTEM:

    • With the radiator cap off, start the engine and set the interior heater to maximum heat and fan speed high.

    • Let the engine run until the thermostat opens (upper radiator hose becomes hot). As the coolant level drops, keep topping it off with your 50/50 mix.

    • If equipped, open bleed valves (often near the thermostat) until a steady stream of coolant flows out.

  4. FINALIZE:

    • Once the system is bubble-free, fill to the correct level and install a new, proper-specification radiator pressure cap.

    • Fill the coolant recovery reservoir to the "Cold" mark.

    • Let the engine cool completely, then re-check and top off both the radiator and reservoir.


Post-Installation Check & Long-Term Care

  • Leak Check: After a test drive and cool-down, inspect all connections for leaks.

  • Annual Inspection: Check coolant level, condition, and concentration every year. Visually inspect the radiator fins for debris and hoses for cracks.

  • Scheduled Maintenance: Adhere to your vehicle manufacturer's recommended coolant flush and replacement interval (typically every 3-5 years).
