Ensuring your engine runs cool and efficient starts with a proper installation. This comprehensive guide will walk you through the entire process of installing and maintaining your new ZING KING radiator.

Before You Begin: Critical Safety Information

Your safety is our priority. Please read and understand these warnings before handling tools or coolant.

  • COOL ENGINE REQUIRED: Never attempt to work on the cooling system until the engine has cooled for a minimum of 2-3 hours. Confirm by touching the radiator or upper hose—it must be cool.

  • HIGH-PRESSURE HAZARD: Removing the radiator cap on a hot system can cause a violent eruption of scalding coolant, leading to severe injury.

  • MOVING PARTS: Be aware of electric cooling fans that may engage automatically, even with the ignition off. Disconnect the battery if instructed.

  • CHEMICAL SAFETY: Ethylene glycol coolant is poisonous. Wear gloves and eye protection, clean spills immediately, and store fluid away from children and pets.

What You'll Need: Tools & Supplies Checklist

Gathering everything beforehand ensures a smooth installation.

Essential Tools:

  • Socket wrench set with extensions

  • Ratchet, screwdrivers (flathead & Phillips)

  • Pliers (slip-joint and/or hose clamp pliers)

  • Drain pan (at least 2-gallon capacity)

  • Funnel

  • Jack and jack stands (rated for your vehicle)

  • Wheel chocks

Safety & Consumables:

  • Chemical-resistant gloves

  • Safety glasses

  • Shop towels or clean rags

  • New Coolant: Use the type specified for your vehicle, pre-mixed 50/50 or concentrate with distilled water.

  • (Optional but Highly Recommended): Cooling system pressure tester and vacuum refill tool.

Step-by-Step Installation Procedure

Phase 1: Preparation & Draining

  1. Secure the Vehicle: Park on level ground, set the parking brake, and chock the rear wheels.

  2. Lift & Support: Safely lift the front end and place it on jack stands. Never rely solely on a hydraulic jack.

  3. Drain Coolant: Place the drain pan underneath. Open the radiator drain petcock or carefully loosen the lower hose clamp to drain the coolant into the pan. Dispose of old coolant responsibly.

Phase 2: Removal of the Old Radiator

  1. Disconnect Hoses: Loosen the clamps on the upper, lower, and coolant reservoir hoses. Twist the hoses gently to break the seal and remove them.

  2. Disconnect Ancillaries: Unplug the electrical connector for the cooling fan and/or fan shroud. If equipped, carefully disconnect the automatic transmission cooler lines using the correct wrench to avoid rounding the fittings.

  3. Remove Mounting Hardware: Unbolt any brackets or shrouds securing the radiator to the chassis.

  4. Extract the Radiator: Carefully lift the old radiator straight up and out of the engine bay, mindful of any remaining drips.

Phase 3: Installation of Your ZING KING Radiator

  1. Position New Radiator: Lower the new radiator into place, ensuring it sits correctly on all mounting pads or guides.

  2. Reconnect Transmission Lines (if applicable): Use new O-rings or washers when reattaching transmission cooler lines. Tighten fittings to specification.

  3. Reattach Mounting Hardware: Secure the radiator with all bolts and brackets. Snug is sufficient—do not overtighten.

  4. Reconnect Hoses: Attach all coolant hoses to their corresponding ports and secure them with new clamps for a reliable seal.

  5. Reinstall Fan & Shroud: Mount the cooling fan assembly and reconnect its electrical plug.

Phase 4: Refill, Bleed & Test

  1. Refill with Coolant: Close the drain petcock. Using a funnel, fill the radiator with the correct coolant mixture until full. Fill the overflow reservoir to the "Cold" mark.

  2. Bleed the System (CRUCIAL): This removes trapped air. With the radiator cap off, start the engine and turn the heater to maximum heat/high fan. Let the engine run until the thermostat opens (upper hose gets hot). As the level drops, add more coolant to keep the radiator full. Replace the cap once the system is bubble-free and circulation is steady.

  3. Pressure Test & Final Check: (If using a pressure tester) Apply pressure to check for leaks. Visually inspect all connections. Lower the vehicle from the stands.

  4. Road Test: Take a short drive, monitoring the temperature gauge. Allow the engine to cool completely, then recheck and top off the coolant reservoir level.

Long-Term Care & Maintenance Schedule

Protect your investment with simple, regular checks.

  • Weekly/Bi-weekly: Visually inspect for coolant leaks or damaged fins while the engine is cool.

  • Every Oil Change (or 6 months): Check coolant level in the overflow tank and inspect hose condition for cracks or soft spots.

  • Every 2-3 Years (or 30,000-50,000 miles): Perform a complete coolant flush and refill as per your vehicle manufacturer’s recommendation. Test coolant strength with an antifreeze tester.

  • Yearly: Gently clean radiator fins with low-pressure air or water to remove debris (bugs, leaves, dirt). Never use a high-pressure washer.

Troubleshooting Quick Reference

Symptom Possible Cause Action
Overheating after install Air pocket in system Re-bleed cooling system thoroughly with heater on.
Coolant leak at connection Loose clamp or damaged hose Tighten clamp or replace hose. Ensure sealing surfaces are clean.
Low coolant persistent Small leak or evaporation Pressure test system to identify source. Check reservoir cap seal.
Poor A/C performance Airflow blocked by debris/condenser Clean radiator and condenser fins.
